Bridging Work Permit Application

Bridging Work Permit Application

Bridging Work Permit is a specific type of work permit which gives qualified foreign nationals who are currently in Canada an additional open Work Permit to bridge the gap between the expiry of their current Work Permit and the final decision of their application for permanent residence (APR).

To be eligible for a Bridging Open Work Permit,
the following parameters must be met:

  • The foreign national is currently in Canada;
  • The foreign national has a valid status on a work permit that is due to expire within the next 4 months.
  • The foreign national must be the principal applicant on an APR under the Federal Skilled Work Class (FSWC); Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC), Provincial Nominee Class( PNC), or Caring for Children Class or Caring for People with High Medical Needs Class (if the APR 1 of the 2 caregiver classes were submitted before June 18, 2019).
  • The foreign national has completed one of the following APR stages:
    • Electronic application for permanent residence (e-APR) submitted under Express Entry has passed Section 10 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR) completeness check; or
    • Receipt of a positive eligibility assessment on their paper APR submitted by mail under one of the economic classes above.

The following foreign nationals do not qualify for a BOWP:

  • The foreign national has let his or her status expire and must apply for restoration of status to regain their temporary resident status;
